We have a new office in the house! If the new houses arrangement, we decided to separate our offices, as both of us work from home and extra space would be nice. So, the previous TV room, that was initially purple…
And then passed through a fast makeover..
First, we had to address the floor. As most of the house’s floor it was in need of refinishing but in good shape.
I stripped the old varnish mixed with glue and whatever else was mixed there.
Then we cleaned up and sanded everything.
For finishing we decided on staining and oiling. I found an interesting product, that needs just one coat and can be reapplied without stripping or sanding (what is particularly interesting in a house with two running dogs). And here are the floors finished, just before painting the baseboard.
And after furniture and deco went in.
Last year I bought a door knob for the office. And then it was missing a piece. We bought the piece but then there was a miscalculation and the piece was cut too short. Then it took several months to buy a new piece. Finally I bought it yesterday and Pierre installed it today!
For long we had that as a knob:
Much better now.. And yes kids are getting an english lesson 😉
I forgot posting two other projects we made for the office. First, we renovated an old radio that was left by the previous owner. It was collecting dust in the basement for a long time. I forgot to take a picture of it before we started working on it, but it was dusty, really dusty. It is a Lafayette Radio, model C-37, from 1939. It is not in perfect conditions, but it is a nice piece any way. We cleaned, and cleaned, and then cleaned it again. Then we disassembled it, and cleaned everything again.
Pierre set new speakers inside so we can connect modern devices and pretend it is the radio playing. 😉
I also upgraded a little my cork board. It was a very basic one, that I just added some extra to the frame..
.. and covered the cork with burlap.
The seam appears more than I would like, but now covered with pics, notes and whatever you can’t really see it. And it goes much better with the office.
Well, there are some little things to be finished, especially on decor, but the office is done!
I will post about some of the little projects we made, and will make, but for now lets enjoy some before and after:
For this makeover we didn’t buy any new furniture or decor piece. It was all about working with what we had and painting. The only fully new “piece” is the bookshelves that I made from scratch.
So nice to have something kind of finished… 🙂
Pierre started playing electric guitar. More precisely, practicing electric guitar. It was a long time passion and I was very happy to give him his first guitar. I was just not aware that they are related to rabbits and this one guitar become three… We are almost a family band! So, along with the guitars it comes the accessories, or whatever this stuff is called, like amplifiers, pedals, cables… and a stool. We are not yet finished with the musical side of the office, but the stool is done!
It started with a couple of dollars piece that Pierre got at the thrifty store, and a leather jacket I got at the same place some days later. Some spray paint, staples and a little time, and here we go. Before and after.
I have also, sort of, finished the “bookshelf”. My original plan was to make it out of wood boxes, but the boxes I was thinking were not available and I didnt find any alternative. So I decided to make my own boxes.. I made the project, got the wood cut at Home Depot, stained, nailed and oiled the boxes.
And now we have the bookshelf!
We are just waiting to fully dry and books are coming back soon.
Almost there, almost there!
Well, plans never work, right? So.. the plan was to finish the office before I had to start working again. I didn’t finish. And I started to work again, in a partially-ready office. That means we have half of the office stuff in the living room. A radio being restored in the kitchen. And we didn’t have light…
But now this is solved!
Remember the fixture that was there before? I really really didn’t like it.
But I didn’t have any new one in view. So I decided to make me one simple fixture. I grabbed some basic materials and in couple hours we “assembled” and installed it.
Nice! Back soon – I hope – to show the new bookshelves (also DIY) and some other little details that are coming together.
Done! We started moving back furniture and decorating it. I am also working on the bookshelf. Back soon with updates…
